Blackhawks Fire Coach After League-Worst Start

The Chicago Blackhawks have fired head coach Luke Richardson, signaling their dissatisfaction with the progress of the team’s rebuilding efforts. The decision comes as the Blackhawks have struggled to a dismal 8-16-2 record, having lost four games in a row and going 3-9-1 in their last 13 games.

General manager Kyle Davidson cited the lack of results matching the team’s expectations, stating that a change was necessary as they continue to take steps forward in their rebuilding process. The Blackhawks had expected to be more competitive this season, having signed several notable free agents, including Tyler Bertuzzi, Teuvo Teravainen, Alec Martinez, and Craig Smith, in addition to the return of Calder Memorial Trophy winner Connor Bedard.

However, Bertuzzi and Teravainen have struggled to find their footing, while Martinez has been hampered by injuries. Bedard, the key to the Blackhawks’ future, has also faced challenges, with his offensive production lagging behind his rookie season. The team’s lack of scoring, averaging just 2.42 goals per game, has been a significant issue, a problem that has plagued the Blackhawks for some time.

In Richardson’s place, the team has elevated Anders Sorensen, who had been coaching the Blackhawks’ top minor league affiliate in Rockford, to the role of interim head coach. Sorensen is a familiar face within the organization, having been with the Blackhawks since the 2013-14 season as a development coach.

The timing of the coaching change is noteworthy, as the Blackhawks are set to host the Winter Classic on December 31 against the St. Louis Blues at Wrigley Field. The NHL has already released a rendering of the rink set up at the home of baseball’s Chicago Cubs, adding to the anticipation for the event.
